Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy Services work in the hospitals and community to assess and support adults and children to overcome functional problems and live as independently as possible. This might include a range of interventions e.g. advice on conditions, information or help to problem solve a particular issue, arrange adaptations to a person's home, school or work environment, or provide equipment to make everyday tasks possible. |

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists work in the hospital and community. We work with a huge variety of people – from young children who stammer to older people recovering from stroke and other brain injuries. We aim to help give them ‘voice’ by improving their communication abilities and addressing their swallowing, eating and drinking difficulties.
We work closely with parents, carers and other professionals, such as teachers, nurses, occupational therapists and doctors |

Home Care Service

The comforts of home mean a lot to people - whether they are growing old and less able, if they live alone and are just back from hospital after an operation or an illness, or if they have some other condition which makes them less able than most to cope with the ordinary tasks of daily life.
It is the Home Care Service of the Social and Community Services department at Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar - one of the best resourced services of it's kind in Scotland - that makes it possible for people to retain or regain their independence, making a real difference to the quality of people's lives in the community.
The purpose of the Home Care Service is to provide care to people in their own homes. The level of care will be decided following an assessment by a Care Assessor or a Social Worker to ensure that the care being provided is sufficient to meet individual eligible needs.
For an assessment for this service contact your local office during office hours (9am to 5pm):

Mental Health Officer Service

Mental Health Officers (MHO) are specially trained Social Workers who support people with mental health problems who sometimes have difficulty in recognising that they might benefit from treatment. MHOs tell people affected by mental health law about their rights and make sure people get the care they need. This includes helping people to access an independent advocate – www.advocacywi.co.uk
The MHO Service is mostly used by Doctors (GP's and Psychiatrists) seeking consent for the detention of people under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
Because all MHOs are Social Workers they can provide other services for the people they support. This can include advice about accommodation, support, welfare benefits, employment and leisure options. MHOs also act as a resource for Social Work colleagues, voluntary organisations and other projects, offering information, advice and guidance on mental health issues.
MHOs are based in the two (Community Care Teams) within the Western Isles.
Lewis and Harris Team Lewis office 01851 822711
Uist and Barra Team Uist office 01870 604984
Barra office 01871 817217
Under Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 and Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007, MHOs also perform many of the legal duties of Western Isles Council.
